Raised in St. Petersburg before moving to Australia in 1998, where she completed a commercial degree at Sydney University, Afonina began her career as an intern at Harper’s Bazaar Australia, later becoming the magazine’s fashion editor, before styling for titles including Elle, Russh and Vogue.
